I remember listening to an interview with a Buddhist meditation teacher. He stated that every day, there are gems. We often miss them because we're just so busy. But we would be wise to take a moment to pick them up and reflect on them with gratitude. They are precious gifts.
Missing them is understandable. Our brains are hard-wired toward a negativity bias. We constantly scan our environment for what's wrong or possibly dangerous. Doing so increases our chances of survival and it encourages us to act in ways that keep us safe. However, this can also lead to anxiety, anger or fear over things that we don't always have much control over.
Luckily, there is an antidote. Making a conscious effort to see what's right and what's good. To actively seek out these precious gems that are often overlooked. Doing so gives us the opportunity to feel grateful and happy for the many gifts each day has to offer.
Now, some days this can be very, very difficult. For example, the other day, my husband was in the hospital and was quite ill. I was so worried because he was having trouble breathing and it was heart breaking to see him that way.
I felt overwhelmed, but when I remembered this lesson, I made a conscious choice to look for the daily gems. After some deep reflection, I remembered all the people who were working so hard to help my husband get better and the scientists who made there work possible. I reflected on all of our friends and loved ones who were with us in spirit, keeping us in their thoughts and prayers, or sending words of encouragement. I even reflected on the fact that the cafeteria provided everyone with free coffee.
Then, when I got home, I found an unexpected package. It was a gift, a book called "The Dalai Lama's Cat" (a book I highly recommend) from my yoga teacher, Christine Fuches. It even came with a lovely note.
I'm very happy to say that my husband is now home and feeling much better. This is due, in no small part, to the wonderful people who supported us during this time of need. There is just so much to be grateful for.
See if you can take a moment to reflect at the end of each day, for just a few moments, to find some of these precious gems. Really pick them up, reflect on them with gratitude and see if it helps. It won't always be easy, there will be days when it seems impossible. You might have to look very hard, but it's worth it. You don't want to miss them.
Do you have some precious gems that you would like to share? If so, I would love to hear about them.
Be well and may you always find joy in your practice.
