Journaling and Morning Rituals

Often, we think about creating healthier habits. I prefer to look at them as rituals, rather then habits. Looking at it as a ritual creates a sense of reverence and feels more meaningful somehow.

Over the last 5 years or so, I’ve been introducing journaling to my morning rituals, as a way of finding more peace and healing during these crazy, chaotic and sometimes, even heart-breaking times.

I’m certain I’m not alone in this. There’s been political upheaval, Covid, social injustice and even wars. It’s hard to bare witness to so much pain and not be effected.

I certainly don’t have all the answers. I do know I value love, compassion, connection, justice, courage, temperance and wisdom. I do fall short at times, but I try to live by these values daily.

This brings me to the topic of journaling. It’s a powerful tool that pairs beautifully with yoga asana practice. So, I wanted to share this with you, maybe it could help you as well. Try journaling each morning for a week and see what happens. Even if it's just for 5 minutes.

Not a morning person???? Try journaling right before bed as an evening ritual instead.

Here are 3 Journaling Prompts, to help get you started:

  1. Brain Dump. Just take 5 minutes to write down anything that comes to mind. Anything at all. The trick here it not to edit yourself.
  2. Gratitude. What do you feel grateful for? Take a moment to really reflect on it. It might not come to you right away, so take a few minutes to reflect and write it down.
  3. What quality or value do you want to bring into the world with you today?

I recommend combining your yoga practice with journaling. I know it isn't always easy to find the time, but if you can, I highly recommend it.

If you do try it, let me know how it went.

Be well,

Debbie
