Our Core Values are our deepest and most fundamental beliefs. They shape our identity and guide our actions and behaviors. They can also be a reflection of our ideals and the kind of person we would like to be.
Being in-tune with your core values can help you develop healthier habits, or break unhealthy ones. If you have a difficult decision to make, your core values can help inform you.
They work like a compass, helping you navigate through life's ups and downs, and leading you closer to your greatest potential.
How does this relate to yoga? Yoga has a value system that is rather similar. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it is suggested that in order to find a state of yoga (union) with the divine, we need to adhere to the "core values" called Yama. Yamas are social restraints and they ensure that we act in a way that promotes a sense of well-being for ourselves and our community.
These 5 Yamas are:
Non-harm (Ahimsa)
Non-stealing (Asteya)
Truthfulness (Satya)
Non-greediness (Aparigraha)
Non-promiscuity or faithfulness to one partner (Brahmacharya)
These help guide us, like a lantern in the dark, as we navigate the yogic path. They inform us and lead us toward more skillful action, both on and off the mat.
Yoga is so much more than postures (asana). Although it isn't necessary to adopt any particular religion or ideology to practice, adopting these principles can make it more fulfilling and fruitful.
