Why Self-Care is NOT Self-Ish

It's both noble and notable that society values selfless acts. They are the heroes in every story, they are the parents that sacrifice daily to ensure their child can have a better life and they are the warriors who make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. There are certainly many reasons for us to give thanks and praise.

It is no wonder than, that we can sometimes feel that if we are taking time for ourselves, it's somehow selfish. We often overlook the fact that our being well and taking care of ourselves means we will be stronger and more capable of helping others. When we feel well and are in good spirits, we share that joy with all those we come in contact with. When we are healthy and strong, we are more able to help lend a hand to others who might need our help.

Here are some ways that you might be able to incorporate a self-care routine into your daily life. Some require as little as 5 minutes.

1) Take a quick walk outside. Notice the sounds, smells and sights. Even observe how it physically feels to walk. Tune into your breath, or just feel your feet making contact with the ground.

2) Take 5 minutes to sit with eyes either closed or very soft and focus on the sound and feel of your breath. Feel the air or the clothes on your skin. Feel the chair or cushion your sitting on. Just take 5 minutes to be in your body and fully present.

3) Meditate on a time in your life when you really felt you were loved. Remember that moment and really embrace it. What did it feel like? Soak that in.

4) Self massage for your feet. Find a nice oil, scented if you like, or a nice lotion. Then gently and mindfully, work it into your feet. Here's a great YouTube video from 2 physical therapists that I just adore. I watch a lot of their videos and find them both helpful and entertaining. A little goofy but totally lovable.

Here's another one that is based on reflexology:

I hope this self-care practice inspires you to cultivate a strong sense of loving kindness toward yourself. You deserve it.
