Your Evolution & Sun Salutation A

Today, we are going to look at Sun Salutation A, also called Surya Namaskar A. This is a sequences of postures, linked together with the breath.

There are many different kinds of Sun Salutations, but they all contain some of the same postures. These postures are:

Mountain Pose, Forward Fold, a gentle backbend, and Downward Dog.

Here, I would like to show you how the Sun Saluations actually mirror the way we evolve from a fetal position as a child, all the way up to a fully standing human being.

This evolution looks something like this:

See Images Below

1) You start out in the fetal position, just like Child's Pose.

2) Then, you come onto your belly.

3) You begin to look around, to see what's happening around you, just like Cobra Pose.

4) You then come onto our hands and knees, just like Table Top. Here, you learn to crawl.

5) From there, you begin to lift our pelvis, just like Downward Dog.

6)Then we walk our hands towards our feet, or, feet towards our hands, like Standing Forward Fold.

7) Finally, we come up to a standing position, just like Mountain Pose.

And, YAY!!! You did it!!!!!

You stood up for the very first time!

It was long ago, you probably don't remember, but you did it! Let this be a reminder to never give up! It wasn't easy, you probably fell a few times, but you did it.

Now, if we simply change the order of these movements, we get something that looks like this, the Sun Salutation A.

The Sun Salutation A is frequently used as a way to warm up the body, focus the mind and to prepare us for other yoga postures.

I hope you found this as interesting as I did. We will be exploring the Sun Salutation A in class this month.

If you don't want to get up and down from the floor, no worries....we'll be adapting it to the chair in the Chair Yoga Class.

If you have any quesions, please don't hesitate to reach out any time.

I wish you well, may you always find joy in your practice.

Namaste,

Deb
